All battery modellers are invited to request additional features to be included in BPX via discussions boards in GitHub.

Requests are developed into feature proposals, which are reviewed by the BPX Steering Group and scheduled into the evolving BPX release road map.

BPX Steering Group

The BPX Steering Group comprises experienced battery modellers from a wide range of leading companies and research institutions across Europe. It advises the Faraday Institution on strategy for the future evolution of the BPX standard including reviewing the feature roadmap and user requests for new features. In doing so it will ensure the needs of industrial users will continue to be met as battery modelling technologies advance and industrial needs evolve. They will encourage the use of the BPX standard within their own organisations and across the wider industry.

Steering Group leadership

Pete Keevill, a consultant working for the Faraday Institution, conceived the idea of BPX and has steered the project since its inception. He had a 25-year career in Telecoms culminating in co-founding a startup company, Ubiquisys, in 2004 (acquired by Cisco in 2013), which initiated the FemtoForum (now Small Cell Forum) that developed standards for the small cell base-station industry. Through his startup journey Pete has firsthand experience of how standards can impact a new industry.

Dr Carlos Garcia joined BPX as Technical Lead in January 2026 – a new role to add impetus and drive technical advances to the standard as guided by the BPX Steering Group. In this role he makes technical proposals, coordinates member’s efforts, helps draft new version changes and represents BPX in public events.

Carlos previously worked for the Multi-scale Modelling project and several Innovate UK projects for six years, focussing on electrochemical characterisation and rapid ageing of lithium-ion cells. He obtained his PhD from Imperial College London in 2018 and earned MSc degrees in Aerospace Engineering (UC San Diego) and in Physics (U Complutense).

Looking to the future

In the short and medium term, the Faraday Institution will continue to fund the development of the BPX standard as part of its commercialisation activities from its research programmes. In the longer term it is anticipated that BPX will evolve to become a membership-funded standards development organisation, led by an executive board of fee-paying members with the steering group evolving to become a technical advisory board.
